There’s an old story of a young man who climbed a mountain to meet a wise elder. The journey was hard, and when he arrived, he proudly listed all he had accomplished to get there. The elder listened quietly and then offered him tea—but continued pouring long after the cup was full. The young man shouted, “It’s spilling!” The elder replied, “Like this cup, you are too full—of yourself. I cannot fill you unless you empty yourself first.”
Humility is not thinking less of ourselves—it’s thinking of ourselves less, and making room for God.
James 4:6 reminds us that pride and grace don’t mix. When we exalt ourselves, we push God’s help away. But when we humble ourselves, He leans in with grace and favour.
